As we celebrate Father’s Day this year, we are sweetly reminded of our perfectly loving Heavenly Father. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 1:3 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,”. One of the Greek words translated for Compassion is oiktirmos, derived from the root word oikos, which means “to dwell”. At first glance, this may seem to be a strange correlation. However, our God has historically shown compassion to his people through his consistent pursuit, care, and nearness. In the ultimate act of compassion, he quite literally sent his Son to dwell among us. Jesus does not shy away from our dirt or mess, instead He enters in.
With us in Every Season
Our Father is with us in every season. There is not a place we could go where he is not with us. This is a scriptural promise and his word does not return void. He is with you as you patch up the bruised elbow, dry your child’s tears, and read that favorite bedtime story for the hundredth time. He is with you in the moments of uncertainty, when you feel that you missed the mark. We have a God who champions fatherhood as it is at the very core of His being. In honor of Father’s Day, we have the privilege of hearing from Dr. Constant Lu, a longtime Compassion Connect champion. Constant shares a little bit of his fatherhood journey, including what it has been like to serve beside his son at our Compassion Clinics.

During many Compassion Clinics my son Isaac has assisted me as I treated dental guests. It has been a joy to see him mature into a young man who will be starting his own journey as he begins dental school this July. But my satisfaction runs deeper than that. Although imperfectly, I have done my best as a father to bring him up in the Christian faith. I have seen him take many steps, sometimes forward, some backwards. All for his ultimate good. His mother and I encouraged him to build friendships with his peers at church and school. He learned outdoor skills and team building in Boy Scouts. Sports, drama, art and music helped develop his physical and creative skills. We were privileged to see him baptized as he took initiative to grow in his faith. Short term mission trips expanded his perspectives on life. We saw his struggles as he was sent home from college in California during the Covid pandemic to isolate. We had discussions about the “birds and the bees” and marriage. God has used this, and much more to develop Isaac into the man He has called him to be.
Just as there has been a divine fatherly hand guiding Isaac, the same help is available for each of us. It doesn’t matter if you’ve had a good father, or if you’ve been a good father. Because our Heavenly Father is ever present, and by far, surpasses all earthly dads. He calls us to be His sons and daughters, set apart for His glory and purpose. He wants to spend time with you today! Listen to His heart. Be still as He reveals his Word to you, and today you will know why He is called “the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. . .”
