Cultivating A Spirit of Service and Generosity

The Christmas season brings lots of holiday bazaars, markets and festivals. This year, my favorite has been Gilbert Christian Christmas Market. We were invited by one of Compassion Connect’s own young volunteers, SuLaina Baughman. This one had it all; holly, food, arts and crafts, and homemade everything. It’s an inspiring showcase for young students to sell their own goods while contributing a percentage of their proceeds to a charity of their choice, making a positive difference in the world around them. SuLaina was eager to participate and chose to raise funds for Compassion Connect. She made her very own scented goat milk soaps: peppermint, orange spice, lemon-thyme, and of course, lavender. They smelled amazing. I had to buy at least one of each!

A History of Serving Others through Compassion Connect

SuLaina and her parents have been actively involved with Compassion Connect for many years. SuLaina’s parents have volunteered consistently and have also led several teams throughout the years, always with their children by their side. Their unwavering commitment to service has had a profound impact on their children, instilling in them a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others.

A Family’s Impact

SuLaina and her family are only one of many we have had the pleasure of knowing and serving with. But their commitment to service and generosity serves as a shining example of the positive influence families can have on shaping children’s values and attitudes. Here are a few reasons why it is crucial to cultivate a lifestyle of family service:

Building Character

By engaging in acts of service together, parents (or grandparents!) provide a hands-on opportunity for children to develop a deeper understanding of the world, which in turn fosters empathy towards those less fortunate and desire to make an impact on the world. Service also develops kindness, selflessness, and gratitude – character traits that will last a lifetime.

Strengthening Bonds

Engaging in service as a family fosters a sense of togetherness and strengthens the bonds between family members. It creates shared experiences and powerful memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Cultivating Generous Stewardship

Modeling generous giving for children teaches them the importance of stewarding financial gifts wisely. Demonstrating an interest in the well-being of others encourages children to actively contribute to their communities and cultivates joy in giving.

Creating a Legacy

When families prioritize service, they create a legacy of compassion and generosity that can be passed down through generations. This legacy continues to make a positive impact long after the initial acts of service have taken place. For believers, this legacy is eternal!
