Spring Cleaning: Making Room for Jesus in Your Life
Spring is finally here, and with it comes the familiar tradition of spring cleaning. We all know the feeling of clearing out the clutter, scrubbing away the dust, and creating a fresh, new space. But what if we thought of spring cleaning not just for our homes but also for our hearts? Just as we make room in our homes, we can also make room for Jesus, inviting Him to be at the center of our lives.
Clearing Clutter, Clearing Worry
Spring cleaning is all about getting rid of the old and making room for the new. Our homes collect dust, clutter, piles of paperwork, and gadgets that may no longer work. These items can weigh us down and be on our minds constantly.
In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus teaches us not to be anxious about our lives:
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:25-26, ESV)
This passage is a reminder that worry doesn’t add anything to our lives. In fact, it often just clutters our hearts and minds, taking up precious space that could be filled with peace, joy, and trust in God’s provision.
Making Room for Jesus
As we work to declutter our physical spaces, we can also make intentional space for Jesus in our mind and hearts. Just as a clean and organized home feels more peaceful, a life that is uncluttered by constant worry allows for the peace of Christ to join our bodies.
Consider this spring cleaning as an opportunity to:
- Release Anxiety: Jesus reminds us that worrying about things we can’t control only burdens us. This spring, let’s work on releasing our anxieties and trusting that God will provide for us, just as He cares for the birds of the air (Matthew 6:26). The time we spend in worry is time we could be spending in faith and in the peace that comes from trusting in God’s plan for our lives.
- Rearrange Priorities: Spring cleaning isn’t just about throwing things away—it’s about organizing and rearranging. Work on setting goals for yourself. It could be as simple as writing a list of areas that you want to focus on. Then focus on one of those areas each day until you have that list completed. Remember, it doesn’t have to be completed all in one day.
- Let Go of What No Longer Serves You: Just as you might discard old clothes or unused items during your spring cleaning, think about areas of your spiritual life that may no longer serve you. Are there habits, attitudes, or fears you need to let go of in order to move forward with Jesus at the center? The more we clear out what weighs us down, the more room we have to grow in faith and joy.
Trusting God’s Provision
Matthew 6:33-34 says:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:33-34, ESV)
When we seek God’s kingdom first, He promises to take care of everything else. This is a powerful reminder that we don’t need to worry about our needs because God knows exactly what we need and will provide. Trusting in God’s provision is one of the best ways to “clean” our hearts of anxiety and fear.
As you go about your physical spring cleaning this year, take time to also engage in spiritual spring cleaning. Ask God to show you areas in your life where you need to let go of clutter—whether it’s a worry, a relationship, or a distraction. Make room for Jesus in your life by trusting in His provision, rearranging your priorities, and releasing anxieties. The result will be a life that feels more peaceful, more centered, and more aligned with God’s will.
